About

Through her work, Sarah seeks to draw attention to our experience of the physical world and the relationships we have with architectural spaces. Playful wall-based sculptures, constructed from wood, glass, acrylic sheet, or architectural drafting film are inserted into the built environment to explore our perception of these spaces. Distinctions between object and environment are heightened, defined or sometimes dissolved through the use of architectural devices such as alcoves, angled planes and mouldings.

Though her works at first appear simple there is complexity involved in their making and also in their subsequent interpretation. Subtle shifts in light, colour and perspective occur depending on where the viewer stands in relation to the work, serving to emphasize the inherent complexity of the act of seeing. Melbourne-based artist and curator David Thomas has said of her work ‘Mortlock’s cool surfaces and structures belie the fact that they reveal the instability and movement of our own perceptual processes. They act as tools to assist in our negotiation and recognition of perceiving in time and space.’

Originally from New Zealand, Sarah is now living in Boulder, Colorado. She has exhibited in New Zealand, Australia and the United States. She holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia where she was awarded a scholarship for excellence. She has been selected as a finalist in several art awards and juried exhibitions in New Zealand and the United States.
